about

This is the 7th and final Gregorian chant of the ancient 'O Antiphons'. The original author is unknown, but it is thought to have been written by a monk during the dark ages, before 800 A.D. In the 1800's, John Mason Neale adapted an English version from the original Latin.

lyrics

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from satan’s tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o’er the grave
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, o Israel

O come, Thou Day-Spring
Come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death’s dark shadows put to flight

Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, o Israel

You've come
As an infant King
Braving the human condition
To save Your chosen
By a love without conditions

We travel far
To catch just a glimpse
The brightest star
It's impossible to miss

With one hand
You've extended a way back
From the depths
That we willfully fall into
And with the other
You crush the opposer
And dispel our shadowed veil

So we come
With little more to bring
Than Your praise, to sing
Rejoice! Rejoice! O Israel,
Emmanuel has come
